THE LUCKY IRISH PENNY - Authentic Uncirculated Half Dollar Sized Penny with Classic Harp & Hen-and-Chicks Motifs from Ireland in Mini-Folder with Story Card + Certificate of Authenticity. Beautiful coins and you have a very impressive collection - even more so given the quality of the coins. I have had a long standing interest in Irish coins & history although as I started as a sixpence collector this tends to be silver (free state) rather than copper/bronze - the one exception is this token from 1846 as this appears to have been issued by my family which is a bit odd as most. The design for the pound coin is an Irish red deer - The design is very much in the style of Percy Metcalf's design for the 1928 coinage and was executed by Tomas Ryan. The design was also used on the Irish ECU coinage in 1990 where it is augmented with a mountain background. Irish coins had previously been produced in Great Britain at the Royal Mint. The rising expense of minting coins necessitated the introduction of the twenty pence coin in 1986; the halfpenny coin was withdrawn at this time as inflation had reduced its buying power. The introduction of the Irish pound coin required the Decimal Currency Act, 1990.
